Lila Faye Ruring (Phillips)

SIOUX CITY -- Lila Faye (Wulf) Ruring, 81, of Sioux City passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church in Sergeant Bluff, with the Rev. Tim Schiller, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery in Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Online condolences may be sent to christy-smith.com.

Lila was born on May 26, 1928, in Sioux City, to Everett and Pearl (Baird) Phillips. During her childhood, the family lived in both Sioux City and Climbing Hill, Iowa. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School. She married Donald A. Wulf on July 3, 1949, in Climbing Hill. They lived in Sioux City from 1949 until 1953, when they moved to Climbing Hill. The couple operated Don's Grocery Store in Climbing Hill for 18 years. Lila then became a foster parent for 20 years for mentally handicapped children. Don died on Aug. 21, 1991, in Sioux City. She married Claude F. Ruring on Jan. 16, 1994. He died on June 6, 1998, in Climbing Hill. Lila returned to Sioux City in 2005.

She was a member of Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church, the L.W.M.L. and the church Lamplighters. She was also a member of the Association for Retarded Citizens (A.R.C.) and the Climbing Hill Garden Club. Lila enjoyed quilting but, most of all, she loved being involved with her many children and grandchildren and their activities.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Rev. Craig M. and Anita Wulf of Spokane, Wash., and Steven M. and Suzanne Wulf of Lakefield, Minn.; a daughter, Cynthia A. Wulf-McGrath of Sergeant Bluff; foster children, Kathy Leeson, Dawn Hass, B.J. Livingston, Marc Gormally, Gary Gray and numerous other foster children; two brothers and their wives, Leon and Carleen Steinhauer of Sioux City, and Lary and Carol Steinhauer of Ft. Collins, Colo.; a sister and her husband, Gerri and Bill Jessen of Bronson, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six stepchildren and their spouses, Ronald Ruring, Kevin and Doris Ruring, Douglas Ruring, Claudia and John Smotrycz, Melodee and Bill Kagy and Robin Vines; 12 stepgrandchildren; and 19 great-stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two sisters, Lola Ewing and Lois Suckstorf; two brothers, Dale Phillips and Eugene Steinhauer; and a stepson, Michael Ruring.
