Lily Mae Hay (Pedersen)

Lily M. Hay, 87, of Sioux City, formerly of Lawton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Southern Hills Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Lily was born Nov. 18, 1920, to Jens and Marie (Mickelsen) Pedersen Sr. She graduated from Lawton Consolidated School in 1939. After graduation, she attended Tri-State College of Commerce and the National Business Training College. She then took a position as assistant secretary and bookkeeper for the Federal Land Bank in Sioux City. She later became the secretary for Tolerton-Warfield in Sioux City and bookkeeper for Woodbury County Department of Human Services for eight years. Later, she was the bookkeeper for Davy's and Jim's Feed Store in Moville, Iowa.

She married William Glass in 1945. They later divorced. On July 16, 1966, she married William Hay at the farm home where they resided. He died Dec. 6, 1995. She later left the farm and moved to the home of her daughter in Sioux City in 1997.

She was involved in many groups and served on various boards. Some of these would be treasurer for United Methodist Women's Group, sang in the church choir, past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Women's Club, secretary and president of the Meadowlarks Golf League, secretary of the Meadows Country Club board of directors, secretary for the Senior Center Office and secretary and treasurer for nine years for the Moville Chamber of Commerce. She also belonged to the special Coffee Klatch Golf Group, which she enjoyed much, and the 500 card club. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Glass of Cedar Crest, N.M.; a daughter, Kay Gunsolly of Sioux City; a brother, Jens Pedersen Jr. of Spokane, Wash.; four grandchildren, Kirk and Colleen Blackford of Dexter, Iowa, Korey Blackford of Illinois, Kristin Hair of Sioux City and Ryan Glass of Wichita, Kan.; nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Minerva Pedersen; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son-in-law, Craig Gunsolly; a grandson; a granddaughter; two sisters; and a brother.
