Lois Jean Whitead, 80, of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 5206 Military Road, in Sioux City. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., May 8, 2015, at the funeral home.
She was born on Monday, Sept. 10, 1934, in Oto, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest Stowe and Viola (Banta) Stowe. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1953.
Lois married Wesley Whitead in November 1953. This union was blessed with three children. Lois was a baker at the Boulevard Food Store and later Hy Vee for more than 30 years. She retired in 1996. After she retired, she helped out with lunch program at the Riverview School for five years where the kids knew her as Grandma Lois.
She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church and a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She also loved to garden, play bingo and was known for her baking.
Surviving include her son, Wesley (Barb) Whitead of Sioux City; daughter, Peggy (Keith) Appel of Sioux City; four grandsons, Jacob Appel, Joseph (Amber) Appel, Nathan and Andrew Whitead; two great-grandchildren, Avery Appel and Hunter Appel; her sister, Ernestine Stowe of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Robert (Myrna) Koeppe of North Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Pamela Whitead; four sisters, Bernadine Hanson, Bonita Richards, Doris Koeppe, and Joyce Duncan; and her brother, James Stowe.
