Lucille M. Harty, 92, of Sioux City died on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Sunrise Health Services.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Daniel Rupp will officiate. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of the Resurrection at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Harty was born Nov. 11, 1922, at Chamberlain, S.D., the daughter of Emerson and Anna (Phillips) Horton. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1941. She attended Tri-State Business College and completed three years at Briar Cliff University. She married James J. Harty on Dec. 29, 1943, at Chapel 2, Amarillo Army Airfield, Texas.
She was employed during World War II with Kaiser Liberty Shipyard. After their three children were raised, she was employed by the State of Iowa, Department of Human Services as a Social Worker from which she retired in 1983.
She cherished spending time with her family. Whether camping, boating ("This is the Life"), a bike ride or cooking with the kids, she loved spending time with her devoted husband and family. She took great pride in her family. She loved being a grandmother, and her grandchildren loved spending time with her as well. She was a caring and compassionate woman and was no stranger to hard work.
She also enjoyed crafts, sewing, camping, trailering and ballroom dancing and wintered in the Tampa, Fla., area from 1985 until 2009, when she moved to Sunrise Retirement Home in Sioux City. One of her creations, a heavy chair that she macraméd, is currently in use with a trick horse owned by the Emperor of Japan.
She was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Confraternity, Carmel Guild, Bon Temps, Crystal Rhythm, McCook Lake Whirlers, Kings Point Sun City, Florida Dance Clubs and Holiday Ramblers Campers. Her grandmother, Debbie Horton, led the "Girls of 68" in establishment of the gravestone memorial of the First Bride of Sioux City.
Survivors include two sons, James Patrick Harty of Ankeny, Iowa, and John D. and his wife, Monica (Shay) Harty of Sioux City; daughter, Colleen and her husband, Jim Reisener of Indianola, Iowa; grandchildren, Molly Harty, Zachary Harty, Sarah Harty and fiance, Joel Plueger, Dan Harty, Emily Harty, Veronica Harty, Matt Reisener, Annie Reisener; and one great-grandson, Landon Plueger.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, James J. Harty; her parents; brother, Donald and daughter-in-law, Jean Marie (Janis) Harty.
Pallbearers will be Zach Harty, Dan Harty, Matt Reisner, Ron Edler, Mike Edler, and Joel Pluger
Memorials in her name may be directed to Sunrise Manor Health Center, Blessed Sacrament Church and Hospice of Siouxland, where she received excellent care from their team, especially Jean Lendt and Doug Black.
