Luella S. Mutz, 93, of Sioux City, formerly of Pender, Neb., died Friday, March 17, 2017, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Sioux City.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Sioux City (previously known as Morningside Presbyterian Church). Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Luella S. Hansen, the daughter of Henry and Elsie (Smith) Hansen, was born Jan. 8, 1924, on the family farm in Waterbury, Neb. The eldest of four children, she graduated from Thurston High School, and went on to receive her teaching degree. Luella taught country school for the next two years.
On Dec. 15, 1944, Luella was united in marriage with Ervin V. Mutz of Thurston, Neb., and began their life together on the Mutz farm in Pender, Neb. They enjoyed over 50 years of marriage until Ervin's death on Dec. 19, 1995. During her many years as a mother and homemaker, Luella enjoyed gardening and watching her beloved cardinals at the feeder. Her hobbies included painting ceramics and traveling the world. She enjoyed volunteering with the church, soup kitchen, and at Sunrise Manor, where she regularly helped as a receptionist at the front desk. Luella loved cooking and baking, and was somewhat famous for her potato salad and angel eggs.
Luella is survived by four sons, Ronald (Blanca) Mutz of Venice, Fla., Keith (Ann) Mutz of Windsor, Colo., Roger (Nancy) Mutz of Littleton, Colo., and Les (significant other, Elizabeth Bishop) Mutz of Vernon Hills, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin; and her three siblings, Leona Mae “Lee” Kelly (Hansen), Milton Hansen, Caroline Fellows (Hansen).
