Lyle Charles Lukens

SIOUX CITY -- Lyle C. Lukens, 84, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be posted at www.christysmith.com .

Lyle was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Knox County, Neb., to Charles and Mary (McDonald) Lukens. He was raised on a farm near Naper, Neb., in Boyd County. After his discharge from the service, he lived in various places and moved to Sioux City in 1947. He has been a Sioux City resident since then.

Lyle married Janet L. Buhman on Dec. 22, 1951, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Upon arriving in Sioux City, he was employed at McGuirk and Taylor Feed Store for about eight years and then at Wilsey Steel. He began working at Sioux City Foundry in 1963 and retired from there in 1991.

Lyle was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was involved at OWLS at church.

Lyle received a kidney transplant in 1973 -- his brother Leland was the donor. He enjoyed fishing, making diamond willow canes and watching baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Janet of Sioux City; three sons, Keith (Polly) Lukens of Story City, Iowa, Jim (Deb) Lukens of Seattle, Wash., and Mike (Joyce) Lukens of Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Laura (Rick) Riggs of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren, Eric (June) Lukens of Waterloo, Iowa, Daniel Lukens of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jon Riggs of Shelby, Neb., Ben Riggs of Lincoln, Neb., Joe (Angela) Lukens of West Lafayette, Ind., and Kim Lukens of Jackson, Tenn.; five sisters, Viva Langmack, Dorothy (Max) Groves, Evelyn Beckmann, Edna (Duane) Thurston and Elaine (Lyle) Jensen; five brothers, Virlyn (Marvel) Lukens, Leland (Ella Mae) Lukens, Lee Lukens, Loran (Arlene) Lukens and Dennis (Sharron) Lukens; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild; his parents; two sisters, Phyllis and Nellie; and two brothers, Donald and Billy.
