M. Lorraine Gareau, 91, of Jefferson, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Lorraine was born on Jan. 7, 1922, in Jefferson, to Jasper and Clara (LaBrune) Gareau. She was raised in Jefferson and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940. She was a telephone operator for Jefferson Telephone Company for many years. She worked in the Jefferson Post Office for more than 20 years, serving as the U.S. Postmistress. She retired in 1989.
Lorraine was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. She had done volunteer work at the church since she was a teenager. She worked with many of the pastors in the parish offices. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Those left to honor her memory include her sister, Marguerite Novinska of Fennimore, Wis.; a brother-in-law, Elmer Bowden; nieces and nephews; and friends, Dick (Sherry) Connors, Pat (Ginny) Connors, and Peg (Jim) Good.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ann Bowden and DoLores Backer; and brothers-in-law, Joe Novinska and Elmer Backer.
