DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. -- Marilyn Joy Peters, 82, of Dakota Dunes died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Jefferson, S.D. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Joy was born Oct. 23, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., the daughter of Basil and Myra Smith. She moved with her family to San Francisco at the age of seven and was very proud of her San Francisco heritage. She attended College of Notre Dame de Namur, Belmont, Calif., transferring to College of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif., where she pledged and became a proud member of Tau Kappa Kappa/ Tri Delta Sorority in 1947. She graduated with a degree in history and literature.
She married Owen H. Peters, a native of Sioux City, on Dec. 18, 1950, in Temple City, Calif. They lived in Temple City for 10 years during which time she taught second grade. They moved to Pasadena, Calif., in order to establish Owen's landscape architecture practice, Ericksson, Peters and Thoms. While in Pasadena, Joy was active in many civic organizations including the Board of the Philharmonic Orchestra, Green House (Children's Hospital of Los Angeles) and the National Federation of Republican Women. In 1997, she and Owen relocated to Dakota Dunes. While in Sioux City, she was a member of the Victory Volunteers (Republican Women). Joy was an avid reader and was employed at Book People at the time of her death.
She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, one of her greatest loves being the Catholic Church.
Survivors include her brother-in-law and his wife, Russell and Alva Peters of Sonora, Calif.; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Preceding Joy in death were her beloved husband, Owen; and her parents.
Pallbearers will be Paul Reinert, John Wolpert, Jerry Collins, Tom Butler, Lee Noel and Jeff MacFarlane.
Joy's family and friends would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Gerald Hagin who treated, as well as befriended her, and the staffs of the June E. Nylen Cancer and Mercy Medical Center for their loving care. Also a special thank you to Don and Millie Jensen and the Rev. Craig Collison for their years of love, support and guidance.
