Mae K. (Sokolowski) Barry, 87, of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Hospice House in Omaha.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Chapel.
Mae was born March 20, 1920, in Danbury, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Papuga) Sokolowski. She was raised in Danbury, where she graduated from St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury. She received her L.P.N. degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City in 1965.
She married George W. Barry in September 1941, in Detroit, Mich. He died Nov. 5, 1964, in Neligh, Neb. After their marriage, the couple moved to Sioux City. She was employed for many years in the medical office at the Plaza as an L.P.N. She had lived in Sioux City until moving to Omaha in 2006.
She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she was a daily communicant, sacristan, choir member and Eucharistic minister. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Ave Maria Court 269. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and cooking. She was well known for her wonderful cinnamon rolls and homemade pies.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Barry Uhl of Sun City West, Ariz. and Omaha and Helen Groth of Omaha; her sons, Dennis Barry and his wife, Jean of Minneapolis and Bart Barry of Omaha; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Barry Uhl, Dr. Timothy Uhl, Molly Uhl Bodhaine, Amy Groth Ochoa, George Barry, Cathy Barry, Ann Barry, Susan Barry Lange, David Barry, Becky Barry and Jennifer Barry; four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Paul Sokolowski of Venice. Fla., George Sokolowski and his wife, Mary Lorna of Holstein, Iowa, and Ed Sokolowski and his wife, Joyce of Claremont, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Christopher Barry; three brothers, Joe, Henry and Frank Sokolowski, and three sisters, Rose Darrah, Frances Schleimer and Helen Ortner.
Pallbearers will be David Barry, George Barry, Barry Uhl, Timothy Uhl, Javier Ochoa and Jeff Buchman.
Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Heelan High School.
