Mamertas "Tony" Luneckas

SIOUX CITY -- Mamertas "Tony" Luneckas, 88, formerly of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at a hospice house in Des Moines.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. The Rev. Daniel Guenther will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Tony was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Lithuania, the son of John and Ellenor Luneckas. Tony was raised and educated in Lithuania, but spent time in several European countries as a young adult, which resulted in his ability to speak several languages fluently.

On March 18, 1949, he married Josephine Drexel in Kempton, Germany. The couple came to Sioux City in 1951. Tony was a baker in Sioux City for 20 years, he retired in 1985.

He was a former member of St. Casimir Catholic Church and joined Immaculate Conception after St. Casimir closed. He did volunteer work at the church for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. For the last three years, Tony had lived in West Des Moines with his granddaughter, Lezli and her family. He kept busy playing with her children, "Little Heinzi" and Joziphene.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Lezli and David Broomhall and their children, Joziphene and Zachary Heinz of West Des Moines, Tony and Heidi Luneckas and their children, Alexandra,Trystin, Madison, Kaiya, and Delaynie of Iowa CIty, Iowa, Darin and Jamie Luneckas and their children, Karlee and Cash of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Nikki and Brad Hoyt and their children, Sydnie, Jacob and Lucas of Quincy, Ill., Kiersten Luneckas of Coralville, Iowa; and his daughter-in-law, Sherie Luneckas of Iowa City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and his son, Karl Heinz Luneckas.
