Margaret Jewell Smith (DeWitt)

Margaret Jewell Smith, 103, of Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the retirement home.

No services are planned. Burial will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Margaret was born April 13, 1905, in Jewell, Iowa, to Rev. James L. and Verna (Adams) DeWitt. She attended high school in Correctionville, Iowa, and graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1929 with a bachelor of arts degree. Margaret worked in the pathology department at USD in Vermillion from 1930 to 1942 as a medical secretary. She moved to Rapid City, S.D., in 1942, where she worked in the flight surgeon's office at the Rapid City Air Base. It was here that she met and married Earl E. Smith on Nov. 13, 1943.

The couple later moved to Warren, Ohio, where she worked with the state of Ohio Department of Mental Health. She worked there for 21 years until her retirement in 1978 at the age of 73. She continued to live in Warren until her husband's death on Dec. 28, 1991. She returned to Sioux City to join her sister, Vivian DeWitt, at Countryside Retirement Home in 1992.

Margaret was a member of First Methodist Church and the American Association of University Women, both in Warren, Ohio., and the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter Alpha 44 of West Farmington, Ohio. She was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church here in Sioux City.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Robert Rowse of Renton, Wash., Jean DeWitt of Chaska, Minn., Homer DeWitt Jr. and Sharon Murphy, both of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Homer DeWitt; sisters, Muriel Rowse of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Vivian DeWitt of Sioux City.
