Sioux City - Margery J. Cassens, 80, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at a local hospital.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Torey Lightcap of St. Thomas Episcopal Church officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Margery was born on Oct. 21, 1931, in Westfork Township near Hornick, Iowa, to Clem and Alma (McKnight) Smith. She grew up and attended school, graduating from Climbing Hill (Iowa) High School in 1950.
Following her graduation, she married Roland J. Cassens on May 25, 1950, in Sioux City. She lived in the Climbing Hill area until moving to Sioux City in the early 1990s. She was a homemaker.
Her interests included singing in the choir at the Senior Center, making crafts, embroidering, writing poetry, going to the boat gambling, and family gatherings. She was great at making something out of nothing.
Survivors include her children, Jim and Mary Cassens of Sioux City, Vicki and Ray Mincer of Minneapolis, Nita and Jeff Ainsworth of Sioux City, and Chris and Milton Rouillard of Sioux City; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Bud and Evelyn Smith of Durand, Mich., Betheen and Roger Benson of Sioux City, Joyce and Chuck Galles of Torrence, Calif., Mary Ann Scott of Lakeland, Fla., and Larry and Barbara Smith of Moville, Iowa; and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two children, Kay Erickson, and Ruth Cassens; and siblings, Phillip Smith, Ward Smith, and Grace Moore.
