Marian A. McArthur, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Marian was born on May 8, 1927, in Sioux City, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Alice (Dunn) Bennett. She was a resident of Leeds all her life, graduating from Leeds High School in 1944.
Marian married her high school sweetheart, William "Bill" McArthur on June 21, 1947, at St. Michael Catholic Church. They had four children, Gary, Susan, Mark and Linda. Bill died on Aug. 17, 1994. Marian worked at the Art Center in Sioux City and was a housewife.
She was very active in the Democratic Party and tallied votes at the courthouse during the elections. Marian enjoyed her time at the YWCA and the Siouxland Crafter, where she was always working on a new project. Marian worked on her family genealogy and also was active in the Leeds High Centennial committee. She loved her cats, dogs, birds, gardening and canning. She was always knitting and crocheting, making afghans and sweaters for everyone.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Ray) Haneklaus of Hawarden, Iowa; her son, Mark (Susan) McArthur of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gary L.W. McArthur (Jody) of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, William, Raymond (Teresa), James (Amy) and Stephen Haneklaus, Nathan and Megan McArthur, Jacob, and Benjamin Walding, and Connie (Travis) Walding Harrison; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Mrs. N. Eugene McArthur (Dorothy); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; son, Gary; daughter, Linda; brothers, Ben and Francis "Mutt"; and five sisters, Marie Thomsen, Pearl Gruber, Laura Schindel, Eva Kightlinger and Virginia Boettger.
