Marion M. Kelly (Matern)

SIOUX CITY -- Marion M. Kelly, 90, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be noon Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Merlin Schrad will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 6 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Marion was born on April 22, 1921, in Le Mars, Iowa. She attended the former St. Joseph School, which is now Gehlen High School in Le Mars. She moved to Sioux City, where she owned and operated the Restview Convalescence Home in the 1940s and 1950s.
On June 27, 1958, she married Eugene F. Kelly in Sioux Falls, S.D., whose family owned and operated the Sioux City Journal/Tribune and where he was the co-editor. Gene died on Oct. 20, 1976.
Marion was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for more than 50 years and was a member of the church confraternity and served as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Carmelite Guild. Marion loved making a home for her family and enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two grandsons, Eugene and Mary Gehl of Davenport, Iowa, and Joe Gehl of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Beil and Kylie Michelle Gehl; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; her daughter, Carol Ann Gehl to whom she devoted her life; her parents, John and Kathryn (Crowe) Matern; her sister, Helen "Tomi" Hanson; stepdaughter, Patricia Hisey; and her brother, Raymond Matern.
A memorial has been established in her name for Blessed Sacrament Church, The June Nylen Cancer Center and Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
