Marion Frances Schmidt, 101, of Sioux City, IA, died peacefully on November 26, 2024, at Sunrise Retirement Community. Funeral services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Sioux City on Monday, December 9 at 10:30 am with visitation beginning at 9:30. Graveside services will be the following week on December 16 at 11:00 am at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, WI. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Marion was born to Lorenz and Frances Severson on September 16, 1923, in Milwaukee, WI, the youngest of six children. After high school, she attended business schools in both Milwaukee and Terre Haute, IN, and worked in several administrative secretarial positions in both locations over the years, including the Milwaukee Youth Opportunity Center and the Wisconsin State Employment Service.
Marion and her husband, Marcus “Bud” Schmidt, were married by his father, Rev. J. E. Richard Schmidt, on May 20, 1944, at her home. Bud died in 1996 after 52 years of marriage. Together, they were actively involved with the choirs of several LCMS congregations in Milwaukee and Terre Haute. Marion had a lifetime of treasured friends and family members, and even after her move to Sioux City in 1997, continued to correspond with most of them.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law Paulette Schmidt of Sioux City; granddaughter Christy (Matt) Shuput of Papillion, NE; grandsons Mark (Anna Johnson) Schmidt of Ames, IA, and Tim Schmidt of Ames, IA; great-grandchildren Audrey and Emily Shuput, and Zachary and Theo Schmidt; sister-in-law Mitzi Severson of Waukesha, WI; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son Rev. Leland Schmidt; her sisters Mildred and Florence; and her brothers Clarence, Richard, and Russell.
Thanks to the loving staff at Sunrise Retirement these last 14 years, and to the team from St Croix Hospice these last months, for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sunrise Retirement Benevolent Fund, Redeemer Lutheran Church, or to St. Croix Hospice.
