Martha Marie Van Norman (Rock)

MOVILLE, Iowa �" Martha Marie Van Norman, 87, formerly of Moville and recently of Minneapolis, Minnesota, died Thursday, October 23, 2009, at a Minneapolis hospital after a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:00
a.m. Wednesday, October 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville with Reverend Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery in Moville. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Christy-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Martha was born Martha Marie Rock on October 5, 1922, on a farm near Colome, South Dakota to Fred and Anna Rock. Her family moved to a farm near Pierson, Iowa in the spring of 1935. She graduated from Kingsley High School, Class of 1940. She married Verl C. Van Norman November 26, 1943 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville where Martha was active in the Leah Ruth Women’s Circle for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Wink Sparks Post 303, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She retired from Woodbury Central School where she had worked for many years as a custodian. Martha was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking. She also loved baseball and was a longtime Chicago Cubs fan. She and Verl were lifelong campers and the family enjoyed many years of family camping trips. The two of them enjoyed traveling the country after retirement.
Survivors include six children: Lana and her husband Kenneth Krumpus of Wahoo, Nebraska; Donna and her husband Robert Woodfill of Hastings, Iowa; James Van Norman of Minneapolis, Minnesota; LoAnn and her husband William Mockler of Minneapolis; Joan Van Norman of Ames, Iowa; and Karen Van Norman and her husband Philip Nusbaum of St. Paul, Minnesota. She had 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Hertha Hinkhouse of Correctionville, Iowa; Norma Dallen of Seattle, Washington and two sisters-in-law: Janice Rock of Phoenix, Arizona and Hope Stein of Celina, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Verl C. Van Norman (October 24, 1995) and by three sisters: Ella Hopp Meissner, Clara Rippke and Mildred Weidner, and by three brothers: Martin Rock, Albert Rock and William Rock.
Memorials can be directed to the Moville Community Development Association, Inc. for the new Moville grocery store or to Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville.
