Mary Catherine Barkley, 74, of Sioux City died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Indian Hills Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gary B. Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Mary was born Aug. 7, 1933, in Sioux City, the daughter of Frank J. and Rose E. (Gruber) Barkley. She attended the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa, from 1941 to 1952. She had lived in Sioux City most of her life.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She loved to travel with her family and play cards with her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed playing bingo and fishing. She was fluent in the American Sign Language.
Survivors include four brothers and spouses, John and Sally Barkley of Sioux City, William and Mary Kay Barkley of Sioux City, George and Rosemary Barkley of Merrill, Iowa, and Thomas Barkley of Arizona; three sisters, Mildred Albert of Sioux City, Madonna and her husband, Vince Hoefling of Hinton, Iowa, and Rosemarie Messerlie of South Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Carole Barkley of Sioux City; 39 nieces and nephews; and many, many grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jim Barkley; three nephews, Philip, Paul and David Barkley; a grandnephew, Nick Barkley; two brothers-in-law, Dean Wilsbacher and Chris Albert.
Pallbearers will be Mike, Ed, Dennis, Frankie, Matt and Gary Barkley and John Wilsbacher.
