SIOUX CITY -- Mary Boyer, 88, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Countryside Retirement Home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jennifer Santer of Third Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a Daughters of the Nile memorial service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave.
Mary Elizabeth Houtz was born on Nov. 21, 1921, to Howard and Mabel (Bach) Houtz in Sioux City. She graduated from East High School. After high school she took nurse's training at St. Joseph's and received her registered nurse license. Her nursing career spanned 39 years.
Mary and Richard Lyle Boyer were married on Feb. 4, 1946, in Sioux City. They were married for 53 years.
Mary was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church for more than 75 years. Her membership in the Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile both exceeded 50 years. She served in many offices in Nile, both the local and national level.
Mary is survived by her children, Tom Boyer of Olathe, Kan., and M. Elizabeth Boyer of Sioux City; her granddaughter, Mindy and husband, Tony Gutierrez of Omaha, Neb.; and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Logan Gutierrez. Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends survive Mary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; and her eldest son, Bill.
