Mary Josephine Hofer (Gengler)

SIOUX CITY -- Mary J. Hofer, 73, of Sioux City died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mary was born May 31, 1938, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of George and Bernice (Mayrose) Gengler. She lived in Le Mars until the age of 4, then the family moved to Sioux City. She attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Heelan High School in 1956. She attended St. Vincent's School of Nursing, where she earned her RN degree. She worked as an RN for St. Vincent's Marian Health Center and Mercy Medical Center. She worked in orthopedics, surgery and in nursing services for 35 years. She retired five and one half years ago.
Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was very active in church activities such as the Altar Society, church cookbooks and served as a good samaritan. After her retirement, she did volunteer work at the hospital and for the Red Cross.
Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, cooking and having coffee everyday with her brothers and sisters at her brother's restaurant. What she loved most was spending time with her grandchildren, going to sporting events or other activities.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Taresa and Tom Crawford of Sioux City, Michael and Penny of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Daniel and Mary of Guymon, Okla., and Nicholas and Amy of La Costa, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-stepgrandchildren; and nine brothers, sisters and their families, Helen and Jerry Sturgis of Sioux City, Leo and Christine Gengler of Sioux City, Jim and Charlene Gengler of Sioux City, Ken and Marty Gengler of Alta Loma, Calif., Carole Davis of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bob and Mary Lou Gengler of Sioux City, Jeanne and John Stewart of Sioux City, Anne and Chris Hackett of Sioux City, and George and Barb Gengler of Sioux City.
A memorial has been established in her name and may be directed to the family.
