Mary Louise Short (Shaver)

SIOUX CITY -- Mary Louise Short, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Chaplain Kay Morrisey officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date.

Mary was born Feb. 15, 1918, the daughter of James and Lucille (Weichert) Shaver. She lived most of her life in Sioux City and attended West Junior High School. She graduated from Central High School. She then attended the University of Iowa in the dietitian program.

She met the love of her life, James Short, while attending the university and they married on Oct. 17, 1941, in Sioux City. Jim died Sept. 30, 1997, in Sioux City.

She worked at Fishgalls prior to her marriage. She later worked for her husband for several years at the James Short Bookkeeping Company.

She was an artist, bridge player, gardener and loved golf. She was a University of Iowa sports fan and loved Iowa basketball and would referee from her home.

She is survived by her son and his wife, James and Carolyn Short of Montclair, N.J.; two grandsons, David and Timothy, both of Montclair; a sister, Betty Tott of Sioux City; a special niece, Donna Jensen of Sioux City and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her extended family, the caregivers from Matney's Colonial Manor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Bob; and a sister, Jeannie Card.

Memorials may be sent to the Sioux City Art Center or Hospice of Siouxland.
