Mary Geraldine Steen (Manning)

SIOUX CITY -- Mary G. Steen, 86, of Sioux City, went to her heavenly home Sunday, July 31, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her family.
A celebration of her life will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Holstein Cemetery, Holstein, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Mary was born June 30, 1925, in Beresford, S.D., the daughter of Jeremiah and Ellen (Kribell) Manning. She grew up in Beresford, graduating from Beresford High School in 1943. She continued her education at Notre Dame College in Mitchell, S.D., obtaining her teacher's certificate. Mary taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Beresford. She was also a medical secretary for Dr. Bob Krigsten.
She was united in marriage to Harold "Oscar" Steen on Aug. 4, 1953, in Emmet Township, Beresford. They made their home in Sioux City. Following the birth of their children, she became a full-time homemaker. Oscar passed away on Oct. 22, 1985.
Mary was a devout Catholic. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she volunteered multiple hours for the church and school. She had many interests and hobbies, including crafts, gardening and flowers. Mary made each holiday special with her crafts. She was very devoted to her family. Mary enjoyed watching her children's and grandchildren's activities and sports.
Those left to cherish her memory include twin daughters, Charmaine and Terry Cantrell of Dakota City, and Loraine and Jeff Calhoun of South Sioux City; a son, Jerry and Janet Steen of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Ryan Cantrell, Reanna (Wesley) Demke, Rochelle (Michael) Sitzman, Rebecca Cantrell, Diana Calhoun, James Calhoun, Jacob (Lindsey) Steen, Caleb, Abby and Justin Steen; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Makenzie and Nolan Demke; a sister, Colette Sweeney of Sioux City; a brother, Joe Manning of Beresford; a sister-in-law, Donna Manning of Beresford; dear family friends, Donna Root and Alicia Root; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar; sister, Pat McGarry; and a brother, Mike Manning.
The family would like to thank Mercy Medical Center and Hospice of Siouxland for all their loving care.
