Mary Jacquelyn Thies (Murphy)

SIOUX CITY -- Mary J. Thies, 81, of Sioux City died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at her residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Mary donated her body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Mary was born Jan. 29, 1927, at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna (Costello) Murphy. She grew up in Wall Lake, Iowa, and attended Wall Lake public schools, graduating from Wall Lake High School.

She married Bernard "Pat" Thies in 1955, at Omaha, Neb. Together they made their home in Arthur. Pat died on Sept. 9, 1990. Mary moved to Sioux City in 1995.

She was a member of Church of the Nativity. Mary had been an Ida Grove Sacred Heart Catholic Church Circle secretary, Friendly Neighbor Club president for two years, Arthur Women's Club president for two years and Hand Boosters secretary in Arthur. She received a volunteer award in Arthur and taught Catechism at Ida Grove. Mary enjoyed dancing, photography and poetry.

Survivors include six sons, Dick and Cam Neumann of Carroll, Iowa, Wayne and Evelyn Neumann of Charter Oak, Iowa, Michael Thies of Sioux City, Gerald and Barb Thies of New York, N.Y., Don and Peg Thies of St. Louis, Mo., and Bob and Paula Thies of Algona, Iowa; a son-in-law, Marty Johnson of Ohio; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Lois Johnson; and a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Naomi Murphy.
