Mary Ellen Wigton, 93, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary at 4 p.m., and a prayer service at 6 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mary Ellen was born on May 29, 1923, in Sioux City. to John and Mary (Brennan) McNally. She went to St. Joseph Elementary and Cathedral High School, graduating in 1941. She attended Briar Cliff College for one year and then worked as a legal secretary for five years at Griffin and Griffin.
Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Richard W. Wigton on April 12, 1947, in Sioux City.
She was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City, and enjoyed spending time with her family, raising her children, doing crossword puzzles, and working elections. Mary Ellen also volunteered with Headstart where she read and used puppets to teach the children.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, four sons, Timothy (Kaye) Wigton, James (Stefani) Wigton and John Wigton, all of Sioux City, and Kevin (Pamela) Wigton, of Omaha; three daughters, Mary Margaret “Maggie” (Richard) Aspleaf of Sioux City, Catherine “Kate” (Dean) Duzik of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Jean (Roger) Dufresne of Kansas City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Marge) McNally of Washington, Ill., and James (Mary) McNally of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Dr. Jean McNally (Dr. Peter Carbonara) of Englewood, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Jeannette Smith.
