Melvin Charles Finken, 73, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mel was born on March 28, 1944, in Earling, Iowa, to Austin and Rita (Graeve) Finken. He graduated high school and served in the United States Army.
Mel was united in marriage to Laurinda Rice on July 1, 1997, in Elk Point, S.D. He owned and operated Morningside Stationery for 16 years.
Mel enjoyed playing cribbage, solitaire, mowing his lawn, gardening, canning tomatoes, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Laurinda Finken of Sioux City; children, Mark (Jen) of Des Moines, Iowa, Chad (Amber) of Chicago, Ill., Brian (Jessica) of Des Moines, Alicia (Jarrott) Finken of Lake Tahoe, Nev., Maggie (Graham) Hammond of Burien, Wash., and Stevie (Augie) Rice of Sioux City; grandchildren, Jessen, Ethan, Benjamin Charles, Ellison, Violet, Leland David, Skylar Austin, Arnie David and Ava Lee; several wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins; siblings, Myrna (Ron) Powers, Jean (Jim) Wisor, Dale Finken, Gary (Fran) Finken, Char LeMoine and Dan (Linda) Finken; sister-in-law, Hope Finken; and father-in-law, Ralph Maslonka.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ron and Glen; three sisters-in-law; and stepson, David Lee Rice.
