Melvin Lee Olson

Melvin Lee Olson, 88, of Sioux City died peacefully at his home Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Tess Panamarrow officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Melvin was born on Aug. 30, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Nels and Petra (Lee) Olson. He grew up in Sioux City and attended East High School. After school, Mel joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a seaman 1st class.
He was united in marriage to June Anderson on June 19, 1948. They made their home in Sioux City. Mel worked as a fireman for the Sioux City Fire Department. Due to his wife's ill health, he retired in the early 1990s as a captain. He proudly served for more than 42 years. His wife, June, died on Oct. 10, 2001.
Mel enjoyed going to morning coffee and visiting with people. He was sharp as a tack up until the time of his death.
Survivors include four children, Robert (Roma) Olson of El Reno, Okla., Richard (JoAnn) Olson of Washta, Iowa, Debbie (Roger) Janes of Austin, Texas, and Kim (Ken) Sweisberger of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, Tabitha, Anthony, Sara, Michael, Daniel, Jennifer and Jessica Olson, Kristin and Erica Janes, Mindy and Sara Sweisberger; many great-grandchildren; and a brother, John (Darlyn) Olson of Oceanside, Calif.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, June; and several brothers and sisters.
