SIOUX CITY -- Merle Franklin Van Osdel Jr., 63, of Sioux City died Monday, March 15, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to christysmith.com.
Frank was born July 25, 1946, in Yankton, S.D., the son of Merle and Ione (Anderson) Van Osdel. He was raised in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School in 1964. After school, Frank enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves and served with the SeaBees until 1969. He then returned to Sioux City and worked in the family business, Van Osdel Plastering and Drywall. Frank, along with his brother, Bill, became co-owners of the company in 1977 and is still in operation today.
Frank was united in marriage to Dianna Felsing on Nov. 10, 1965, in Elk Point, S.D. They made their home in Sioux City and recently celebrated 44 years of marriage.
As an avid golfer, Frank was a member of the Sioux City Country Club and a former club champion at Hidden Acres Golf Course. He enjoyed golfing vacations with close friends, traveling with family, and will be greatly missed by all.
Frank will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend, Dianna; a daughter, Kelly Grote and her husband, David and their children, Taylor, Sydney, and Anna all of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Jody Kennedy and her husband, Jeff and their daughter, Karly of Sioux City; a son, Brent Van Osdel and his wife, April and their children, Brandon, Caden, Ean, and Bryn all of Sioux City; brothers, Bill Van Osdel and his wife, Twila, and Dave Van Osdel, all of Sioux City; mother-in-law, Mary Felsing of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Dennis Felsing and his wife, Joan of Sea Isle City, N.J.; sister-in-law, Vickie Felsing of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Ione; an infant brother; and father-in-law, Victor Felsing.
Pallbearers will be Taylor Grote, Brandon Smith, Jeff Reinders, John Kollman, Tom Olson, Billy Foulk, Jerry Lengkeek, and Ron Peterson. Honorary pallbearers are Caden and Ean Van Osdel.
