SIOUX CITY -- Merton F. Oberlink, 94, of Sioux City died Dec. 16, 2009, in St. Cloud, Minn.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City, with the Rev. Janice Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Merton was born May 10, 1915, in Hardwick, Minn., to George and Elizabeth Mae (Algood) Oberlink. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Dorothy Rice in Huntington Park, Calif., on Sept. 15, 1946. He farmed in South Dakota for several years before coming to Sioux City in 1952 to work as a meat packer at Swift & Co. for 30 years.
He enjoyed making and flying model airplanes and was a charter member of the Sioux Hell Divers Model Airplane Club (prior to being Sooland R/C Modelers Club). He was actively involved as a volunteer and donor in the Mid-American Transportation and Aviation Museum in Sioux City. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973 and the Honor Guard.
Merton is survived by wife, Dorothy; daughters, Maribeth Swieczkowski of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Lanette (Dennis) Hankins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marta (David) Pederson of Flower Mound, Texas; five grandchildren, Michelle Winslow, Stephanie (Eric) Grahek (their children, Mitchell and Cullen), Chad and Shane Hankins and Christopher Pederson.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Paul, Monte and Max Oberlink and Donald Lee; sisters, Georgia Oberlink and Pauline Buck; granddaughter, Traci Hankins; and son-in-law, Paul Swieczkowski.
Memorials are preferred to Riverside United Methodist Church.
