Merville "Andy" Sorensen, 89, of North Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Merville Andrew "Andy" Sorensen was born on Oct. 24, 1925, in Sioux City, the son of Andrew and Freida (Boetger) Sorensen. He grew up and attended school in Elk Point, S.D. After his schooling, Andy joined the U.S. Navy. Over the years he lived in Phoenix, Ariz., Stockton, Calif., and Sioux City, working for Swift & Co., McKinzie’s Hardware and the Phoenix School System.
Andy married Alma Nation Welch in 2006. They made their home in the Sioux City area.
Andy was a past member of the American Legion. He liked to keep busy working around the house, hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Alma of North Sioux City; his four children, Sandra Raisbeck of Loveland, Colo., Debra Mellott of Phoenix, Bradley Sorensen of Phoenix, and Brian Sorensen of Farmington, N.M.; seven stepchildren, Dawn (Ness) Bashara of Omaha, Norma Cotter of South Sioux City, Pam (Dwight) Boetger of McCook Lake, S.D., Ricke (Bill) Sloan of Sioux City, Dennis (Kathy) Welch of Hubbard, Neb., Susie Welch of Sioux City, and Patrick (Markie) Welch of Sioux City; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rusty; and sister, Irene.
