Mervin Donald Zellmer, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at a local nursing home.
A service of remembrance will be 3 p.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Zellmer officiating. Visitation with the family present will be 2:30 p.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. A reception will follow the service. Online condolences may be sent to

Mervin was born on Oct. 6, 1929, in Sioux City, to Gustav and Catherine (Tina) Zellmer (nee Rippke). He was raised on a farm near Bronson, Iowa, and graduated from Bronson High School in 1947.
He married Jessie E. Butler on May 27, 1951. Following their marriage, Mervin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1953. Upon returning home, he and Jessie moved to their farm east of Sioux City, where they lived for more than 50 years.
Mervin received an award for his 40 years of continuous service on the Woodbury County Planning and Zoning Commission Board of Adjustment. He also served on the board of directors of Farm Service/Growmark and the Woodbury County Farm Bureau Board. He was a board of trustee member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa, and a member of the Electoral Committee of the Woodbury County Republicans.
Upon retiring, he and Jessie enjoyed tending "The Farm" Nursery and Greenhouse, baking bread and gourmet meals for his family and friends, spending time fishing, reading, visiting the casino and relaxing at his cabin in northern Minnesota.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Marnice and Terry Schellinger of Madrid, Iowa, Christine Zellmer-Zant and Steve Zant of Sioux City, and Sandra Zellmer and Randy Mercural of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren, Matthew and Nathan Schellinger, Justin and Nick Zant and Malorie Mercural; two great-grandsons, Kael Mercural and Hayden Zant; a brother and his wife, Arnold and Lorna Zellmer; and three sisters and their husbands, Lorna and Marvin Ebert, Lois and Robert Brown and Lorene and Kent Rogers.
