Sioux City - Metta Irene Devine, 97, of Sioux City died on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 at her residence.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nia Huggins officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date. The Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Metta was born Oct. 3, 1916, on a farm in Coon Valley Township in Sac County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Eunice Harman. Metta attended a country school through eighth grade and graduated from Sac City High School in 1934. She earned a Bachelor of aAts degree in English from Iowa State Teachers College in 1939.
Metta enjoyed being a student and later studied French at Coe College and library science at Morningside College. She lived in Randall, Primghar and Moville, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City. She taught English in Maynard and French in Primghar.
Metta married William B. Devine on June 7, 1940. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member and past president of the United Methodist Women and member and past president of the Moville Women's Club. She was skilled at quilting and other handicrafts as well as an avid reader and card player.
Metta is survived by her husband, Bill of Sioux City; her daughter, Julie Bateman of Salem, Conn., son, Bill (Marilynn) Devine of Cartersville, Ga., her grandchildren, Jennifer (Pete) Shannin of Atlanta, Ga., Alec (Felicia) Bateman of Charlottesville, Va., and Metta Devine-Qin of Goodletsville, Tenn. She was the proud great-grandmother of Jack and Aaron Shannin.
She was preceded in death by seven siblings and her daughters, Susan Schwarm and Marilyn Devine. Metta had many valued friends throughout her life.
