Michael J. Calhoon, 69, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 30 at Cathedral of the Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 29, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Michael J. Calhoon, the son of Wilbur and Harriet (Reilly) Calhoon, was born on Aug. 7, 1948, in Sioux City. He graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School. Michael then served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Michael served as a state senator for Iowa from 1976 to 1980. He later was the manager at Jack in the Box for 22 years, retiring in 2001.
Michael was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux City. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and animals, especially dogs. Michael also liked to watch Notre Dame football.
Michael is survived by his sisters, Annie (Larry) Mahacek of North Sioux City, and Jeannie Calhoon of Sioux City; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; his beloved dog, Sheena; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Theresa Calhoon, Elizabeth Calhoon, Susie Holmes, and Cathie Dennis; a niece, Tasha Calhoon; a nephew, Willie Mahacek; and a good friend, Scott Etzen.
