Michael L. Erskine, 61, of Sioux City went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church officiating. Michael was born Nov. 22, 1946, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. He was the first child of Vernon L. and Kathryn (Lingwood) Erskine. He lived all of his early years in the Morningside area, attended Sioux City schools and graduated from East High School in 1965. He later attended Morningside College and Norfolk Junior College in Norfolk, Neb. In 1979, he graduated from Western Iowa Tech with a degree in band instrument repair.
He was employed with Charlie Zook Motors from 1971 to 1979. He later went to work for Hospe's Mister Music, which was located in the Southern Hills Mall. In September of 2001, he opened the Band Shop, which specialized in string instrument repair and rental.
On Dec. 30, 1967, in Elk Point, S.D., he married the true love of his life, Linda M. Bentz. The couple made their home in Sioux City after residing in Sioux Falls for a few years.
He was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, Morningside Masonic Temple (615), Scottish Rite and the Abu Bekr Temple. He also served on the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association advisory board. Mike enjoyed playing and listening to music, traveling, fishing, hunting and collecting rare musical instruments. He enjoyed driving and working on his sports car and the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings.
In 2003, he was an inductee in the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the 1960s rock band, "The Rockets," and again in 2006, as an original member of "The Dodge Boys." Some of the other bands that Mike was a member in include "The Embers," "The Flairs" and "The Velairs." He was also a founding member of the Siouxland Music Foundation which has been responsible for organizing benefits for local charities.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; a son, Sean of Sioux City; two sisters, Marianne Hughes of Tulsa, Okla., and Kathy and Kelly Angerman of Sioux City; a brother, Allen Erskine of Olathe, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be sent to the family or to St. Luke's Diabetes Education Center.
Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, father and a friend to all who knew him.
