Michael L. Sattizahn, 66, of Sioux City passed away Feb. 28, 2013, at a local hospital following a brief battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:45 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a 4th Degree chalice presentation, at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Michael was born on Oct. 10, 1946 in Independence, Ia., to Millard and Bernita (Brammer) Sattizahn. He attended school in Independence and graduated from St. John's High School. After high school, he attended college at the University of Northern Iowa and then joined the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he lived in Nebraska and Minnesota before moving to Sioux City in 1980.
He married Deborah Hoefler on Oct. 15, 1988, in Sioux City. To this union was born their daughter, Megan. Mike was employed at Mercy Medical Center as a biomed tech and retired recently after 30 years of employment.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City and a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He held offices with both Council 743 and Assembly 265 Garrigan and was a member of the honor guard. Michael was very active in the church, working the many church dinners, serving as an usher and was a member of the finance board. He also volunteered with the soup kitchen.
Michael enjoyed fishing, auctions, rummages, camping, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a handyman and took pride in his ability to fix almost anything.
Survivors include his wife, Deb of Sioux City; three children, Sam and Dianne Sattizahn, Sara Sattizahn and Megan Sattizahn, all of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Reise, Brysen and Alexander Sattizahn; one sister, Nancy Karsten and her children, Richie, Betsy and Katie of Independence, Iowa; mother-in-law, Monica Hoefler of Albion, Neb.; six sisters-in-law, Margaret, Janice, Leona, Dianne, Susan and Eileen; four brothers-in-law, Raymond, Vincent, Ben and Ron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Leo Weber; a brother, Patrick; a sister, Sharon McGlaughlin; brother-in-law, Tom Karsten; and father-in-law, Leo Hoefler.
