Mildred P. Broz (Pivonka)

SIOUX CITY -- Mildred P. Broz, 95, of Sioux City died on Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary Cemetery, Omaha, with the Rev. Al Salanitro officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mildred was born Oct. 27, 1914, in St. Joseph, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Mary (Pert) Pivonka. She moved to Omaha at the age of four. She graduated from Omaha Tech High School at the age of 16. Mildred worked at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Omaha until 1938.

On June 20, 1938, she married Steve Broz Jr. in Omaha. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1938. Mildred returned to the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1950. She retired in 1979 after more than 35 years of service. Steve died in Sioux City on July 31, 1976.

Mildred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Guild and Rosary Society at the church. She also belonged to the Telephone Pioneer's Club and the Birthday Club. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and growing flowers, especially violets. The most important part of her life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her religion.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Skuodas of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Stephanie Susan Johansen of Sioux City and Matthew Steven and Diana Skuodas of Chilliwack, B.C.; three great-grandchildren, Josephine and Jessica Johansen and Caitlyn Skuodas; and her sister, Vlasta Schweiger of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, James Anthony; a sister, Mary Lou Wilkinson; a brother, Frank Pivonka; and a son-in-law, Alfred Skuodas.

A memorial has been established in her name for St. Joseph Catholic Church.
