PONCA, Neb. -- Milton L. "Mick" Hohenstein, 89, of Ponca died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponca, with the Revs. David Liewer, John Lynch and Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in South Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Mick was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Jackson, Neb., the son of William and Amelia (Andersen) Hohenstein. He was raised in the Jackson and Hubbard, Neb., area. He graduated from Jackson Public School in 1937. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1939 and served in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome, southern France, Germany and central Europe.
On April 3, 1949, he married Mary Catherine Lynch. They lived on the family farm in Ponca since 1956. They moved into Ponca 10 years ago. He was a farmer and owned and operated the Sweet Tooth in Jackson for 32 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Martinsburg, Neb., and a 63-year member of the American Legion Harty-McNally Post in Jackson. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and one of his favorite pastimes was making sculptures by welding. What he loved most was spending time with his wife, children and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Ponca; a daughter and her husband, Vickie and Mike Murphy of Waterbury, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Kevin and Jeanie of Jackson and Kenny and Lisa of Ponca; nine grandchildren, Matt, Kelli and Kim Murphy, Melissa, Kyle and Branden Hohenstein and Emilee, Nick and Hannah Hohenstein; a great-grandchild, Mickenon Hohenstein; a brother and his wife, Jerry and Helen Hohenstein of Craig, Neb.; two sisters, Dorothy Kahn of North Port, N.Y., and Mary Fernandiz of Forrest Hills, N.Y.; and three sisters-in-law, Lois Hohenstein and Lillian Hohenstein, both of Dakota City and Mary Hohenstein of Dent, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cathie; two sisters, Wilma Hogan and JoAnne Hohenstein; and five brothers, Edwin, William, Robert, Donald and Phillip.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Victor Hohenstein, Marty Hohenstein, Joe Mari, John Gill, Dennis Hogan, Danny Hohenstein, Bob Hohenstein and Wes Hohenstein.
A memorial has been established in his name for South Creek Cemetery and for Hospice of Siouxland.
