Sioux City - Miriam K. Sullivan, 93, longtime resident of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, in Dubuque, Iowa.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. She was born in Ossian, Iowa, on Oct. 27, 1919, to Edward and Florence (Willging) Klisart. She attended grade school in Ossian and West Bend, Iowa, high school in Whittemore, Iowa, and graduated from Visitation Academy in Dubuque. At the College of Saint Teresa in Winona Minn., she earned degrees in mathematics and business. She was employed at a bank in Spencer, Iowa before moving to Iowa Falls, where she worked at the Citizens State Bank, a bank founded by her father, Edward Klisart. She later became a director and vice president of the Security State Bank in Hubbard, Iowa.
She married John Richard Sullivan at Saint Mark’s Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, Iowa on Oct. 11, 1947.
Miriam was active in Birthright of Siouxland and Marian Health Auxiliary. She was a longtime member and very active in Blessed Sacrament and St. Michael’s parishes. She always welcomed new neighbors and friends with cookies and other homemade goodies.
She is survived by her six children, Mary Sue Sullivan Rethinger (Paul) of Portland Ore., Tom of Thornton, Colorado, Bob (Anita) of Dubuque, Pat of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mike (Sue) of Peosta, Iowa, and Mark (Jane) of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Connie Riley of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren, Laura and Joe of Denver, Matt (Josie) of San Francisco, Kevin of Astoria, N.Y., BJ of Omaha, Bill, Danny and Misty of Sioux Falls, Nick of Madison S.D., Adam of Sioux City, Beth of Peosta, and David and Patrick of Overland Park; and four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jaden, Zoe, and Miley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. "Dick"; daughter-in-law, Annette; grandson, Bobby; her parents; and her brother, Mark.
