Sioux City - Mona J. Van Meter, 89, of Sioux City passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at a local hospital, surrounded by her children.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
She was born March 21, 1924, in Sioux City to William H. and Myrtle E. (Bristow) Anderson. Mona graduated from Central High School in 1942. She married Willard "Bill" Van Meter on March 12, 1945. The two were married for 42 years, until his death. She worked at Wincharger, Western Union Telegraph in Detroit and Chicago, and was an Avon representative for 20 years.
Mona was a member of St. James United Methodist Church for over 50 years, Miriam Circle and Floyd Park Women’s Association. Mona was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She was also a den mother in Cub Scouts while her sons were growing up. She enjoyed playing bridge, Shanghai rummy and spending time with family. Her family was the most important to her.
Survivors include a son, Joel Van Meter of Sioux City; daughters, Carolyn (Lee) Baczwaski of Dakota City, and Joy (Brent) Larsen of Sloan, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way; sisters, Phyllis Johnson and June Hebert; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Tim and Tom; sister, Jeanette; and brothers, Richard and Bill.
