Nancy "Nana" Lee Burnette

Nancy Burnette, known to most as Nana, passed away on April 1, 2025, surrounded by her family, at a local hospital in Sioux City as a result of a health complication. She was 65.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Larkin Chapel (2320 Outer Drive N) with the Funeral Service taking place at 2:00 pm. Luncheon to follow at Calvary Lutheran’s Parish Hall (4416 Central St).

Nana was born on May 29, 1959, in New Underwood, South Dakota, to Edward “Bud” and Ellen Baker. She graduated from Douglas High School in 1977. On April 15, 1983, she married the love of her life, James “Hank” Burnette. They were married in Rapid City, South Dakota, and had been married for 42 years.

Nancy and her family moved from Rapid City to Sioux City in March 1998. Nana had various employment positions. In 2009, she started an in-home daycare. This was her joy and passion. She was able to spend her days watching her grandchildren grow. She also became Nana to all the children she watched.

Nana loved spending time with her family. She loved taking her grandchildren to the movies. She loved shopping, Diet Coke, getting her nails done, and doing “girl days.” Nana was a huge advocate for all her loved ones.

Nana loved hosting unmeasurable holidays. She loved cooking, baking, and always ensured there was enough for everyone. She found joy in surprising others with their favorite food or goodies. Nana’s favorite holiday was Christmas. She would often have a countdown until the festivities happened. She loved watching others excitement when opening gifts. Nana loved family card nights. She enjoyed any activities that kept the family together.

Nana deeply believed family was not defined only by last names or blood, but by commitment and love. Survivors include her husband, Hank; son, Jim (Jennifer) Burnette and their children, Makinzie and Makinna; daughter, Heather (Travis) Barker and their children, Braydin, Landin, Caydin, and Addilyn; and daughter, Sarah (Travis) Crippen, and their children, Braxton, Rylan, Jadyn, and Kyson.
