Nancy L. Unger

Nancy Lee Unger, 88, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at Holy Spirit Retirement Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerome Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. , at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
She was born on April 28, 1926 , in Rochester , N.Y. , to Charles Frederick and Lillian Emma (Hart) Lee . Nancy graduated from East High School in Rochester . She then attended Aeronautical School of Meteorology in Tulsa , Okla.
It was there Nancy met Delbert A. Unger, whom she married on Dec. 27, 1947 . She and Delbert worked together for the National Weather Service in Greenbelt , Md. , until the birth of her first child. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1950, where Delbert took a job with the National Weather Service. Delbert preceded her in death on July 24, 1973 . At that time, Nancy went to work at Immaculate Conception Parish as the head dietary manager until 1990 when she retired.
She was very active on the Carmelite board, Christian Mother’s Board, the Immaculate Conception Credit Union and church circles. Nan dedicated her life to serving her family and her extended family at Immaculate Conception.
Survivors include her daughters, Lesley (Kenneth) Welch of Correctionville, Iowa , and Mary Ann (Brian) Phipps of Hurst, Texas; sons, Michael (Susan) Unger of Sioux City, and Charles Unger of Bloomington , Minn. ; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delbert; a sister, Barbara Senke of Greendale , Wis. ; and great-grandson, Armstrong Zortman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Carmelite Nuns of Sioux City
