Nellie Irene "Nell" Melheim

SIOUX CITY -- Nellie I. Melheim, 95, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Countryside Nursing Home.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tom LoVan officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Saturday in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Miss Nelheim was born Nov. 8, 1914, in Sioux City, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Hofstad) Melheim. She graduated from East High School in 1932. She was known for her travels. She visited 46 countries of the world, all of the United States, Canada and Mexico. Nell founded the Adventurers' Travel Club of Sioux City and it had a membership of more than 5,000 members.

Nell was a lifetime member of Morningside Lutheran Church. She was a soloist with the church for many years, taught Sunday School, was a member of Mary Circle and Women of the Church. She was a volunteer for St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Scandinavian Societies and Sons of Norway, Sioux City chapter of the Lewis and Clark organization, Sorosis Study Club and the Sioux City Women's Club. She enjoyed traveling and planning trips for the travel club. She gave lectures and showed slides of her trips as well as lectured on Sacajawea (the Indian maiden who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition).

Survivors include her brother, Ray Melheim of Moorhead, Minn.; her nieces; her nephews; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Pippett of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Mary Melheim of Moorhead, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Mary Melheim; two brothers, Al and Frank Melheim; and two sisters, Evelyn Loffswold and Violet Pippett.
