Noel John Patterson Sr., 56, of Sioux City passed away in the arms of his family Sunday, March 9, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital after a 20-month battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary conducted by the Holy Cross School, Trinity Heights and the Knights of Columbus at 4 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Noel was born March 27, 1951, in Sioux City, to Raymond and Geraldine (Shaver) Patterson. He attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High School in 1970. Immediately following graduation, he trained as a firefighter with the 185th Tactical Fighter Group and retired from the Guard in 1995, during which time he was activated in connection with Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm. In addition to his 25-year membership with the Air National Guard, he worked at the Port Neal Plant of Terra Chemical from 1971 until 1987, when he accepted the full-time position for the state of Iowa as an assistant fire chief for what was to become the Sioux Gateway Airport Crash/Fire/Rescue. He held that position until his death. His training was put to the ultimate test when he was on duty July 19, 1989 and United Airlines Flight 232 attempted an emergency landing at Sioux Gateway.

He married Kathryn Kay DeLaughter on June 12, 1971 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. God and family were first priorities with him. With them, he enjoyed camping, fishing and bowling. Whenever anyone needed a hand at anything from a simple household repair to helping to raise a roof on a new garage, he was willing to help.

He was an assistant Scoutmaster and Badge Counselor for Boy Scout Troop 100, a 15 year member of the Sioux Trials Girl Scout, a volunteer at Trinity Heights and a member of the American Legion Post 662. He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Men's Club and the Monsignor Newman Flanagan Council 11038 Knights of Columbus. He was an active band parent for 10 years at Bishop Heelan Catholic High School and this involvement continued on in the fall of 2004, when he became a band parent and a member of the "pit crew" for the West High Marching Band.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathryn; seven children, Noel "John" Jr. (Kerry), Trinette and Mary "Kate" (Tom) Loftus, all of Sioux City, Gerri of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Patrick, Michael and Laura at home; three grandchildren, Kaylynne and Nathan Patterson and Addison Loftus, all of Sioux City; two brothers, Richard (Joan) of Sergeant Bluff and Joel (Marsha) of Grundy Center, Iowa; a sister, Marcia (William) Moore of Papillion, Neb.; and two aunts, Sayde Fisher of Lexington, Mo., and Ann Patterson of Buffalo Center, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Patrick's stillborn twin, Timothy.

Pallbearers will be Bob Flanigan, Steve Kimbell, Mike Muir, Phil Ortmann, Randy Patterson and Ron Patterson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the 185th ARW and state of Iowa firefighters.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.
