Noella Jean Garthright, 90, of Sioux City, formerly of Jefferson, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. The Rev. David Roehrich will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Noella was born on Dec. 23, 1922, in Jefferson, the daughter of Phillip and Florence (Bernard) Bernard. She was raised in Jefferson and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1941.
On May 14, 1941, she married James N. Garthright in Jefferson. Noella worked as the secretary for St. Peter church for many years. She also worked at the Jefferson Post Office and KSCJ Radio for a short time. James died on Dec. 12, 1997, in Alcester, S.D.
Noella was very active in the parish, singing in church choir and serving as a member of the Altar Society. She loved to sing and would do it with her family any time she could. She also enjoyed baking and was known for her bread. Noella enjoyed gardening and fishing, but spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the most important thing in her life.
She is survived by her five children, Jack (Jeanne) Garthright of Sioux City, Judy (Lowell) Vos of Kingsley, Iowa, Peggy Gubbrud of Lead, S.D., Joe (Linda) Garthright of Lawton, Iowa, and Tom (Peggy) Garthright of Foxfield, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Pat (Bob) Norton of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Jeannie; a grandson, Todd Garthright; six brothers and a sister, Herman "Speed" Bernard, Rachael Bosse, and Martin, Ben, Hank and Phil Bernard.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name for the Siouxland Alzheimer’s Association.
