Norma Jean McGowan (Young)

Norma Jean McGowan, 87, of Sioux City passed away peacefully Friday, June 27, 2014, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home surrounded by her family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerome P. Cosgrove officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Norma was born in Dixon, Neb., on Oct. 9, 1926, to John and Mary (O'Malley) Young. She grew up in Sioux City, where she attended Washington Elementary School, East Junior High and East High School. Norma graduated from Sioux City East High School in 1945, where she participated in theater, sports and was a commencement speaker. The yearbook described Norma as a "small tornado coming fast."
After graduation, Norma moved to Colorado Springs, where she met 1st Lt. Frederick D. McGowan while working as a dental assistant at the air base. Norma and Fred were married in Exeter, N.H., on May 14, 1946. They had two children, Michael and Patricia. Fred passed away on May 25, 1990.
Norma was active in the Officer’s Wives Club and loved attending military formal dances. She was a Girl Scout leader as well as a Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed entertaining, baking, playing bridge, golf and bowling. She cherished the many lifelong friendships she made as the family moved frequently with the Air Force.
Norma was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish.
Norma is survived by her daughter, Patricia and Eric Lohry of Dakota Dunes, and her daughter-in-law, Sue McGowan of Frisco City, Ala.; her grandchildren, David, Molly, William and Maureen Lohry and Melanie, Michael and Monica McGowan; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Col. Frederick D. McGowan; son, Capt. Michael J. McGowan; brother, Dean Young; and sisters, Loretta (Young) Holway and Shirley (Young) Moran.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bishop Heelan High School to help fund the Norma Jean McGowan Scholarship for Young Women.
