Norman Peter Eckhoff, 87, of Dakota Dunes, SD, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, after a lengthy illness.
A Graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Rose Hill Cemetery, Clark, SD. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Avenue, Sioux City, IA.
Mr. Eckhoff was born Dec. 23, 1927 at Pingree, ND to Henry & Cora (Hopland) Eckhoff. The family later moved to Maynard, MN where Norman graduated from Maynard high school. He entered in to the US Navy on Feb. 16, 1945 and was honorably discharged on Aug. 9th 1946. After returning home from the Navy, he went to work for a local restaurant and later purchased it. He later went to work for Northwest Airlines, working in Chicago, IL, Fargo, ND and Honolulu, HI, from 1953 - 1998 when he retired. He married Shirley Holtman on Dec. 15, 1956 in Watertown, SD. After retirement the couple moved to rural Clark, South Dakota in 2005 to the family farm. He is a Past Commander of the Cagley-Smith American Legion Post # 60 in Clark, SD.
He is survived by his wife; Shirley Eckhoff of Dakota Dunes, SD, son; Randy & Carla Eckhoff of Corcoran, MN, three grandchildren; Ben, Sarah and Allison Eckhoff, two brothers; Virgil & Mary Eckhoff of Sioux Falls, SD and Wayne & Mary Eckhoff of Frazee, MN, a sister-in-law Linda Hornsby of Sandy, Utah, numerous nieces and nephews
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, son; Ronnie, brother; Cecil Eckhoff, sister-in-law; Cynthia Holtman, brother in-law; John Holtman.
