SIOUX CITY -- Norman Ray "Slim" Sharp, 80, of Sioux City, formerly of Worthington, Minn., passed away Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at a local hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Nester officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Slim was born Feb. 1, 1931, in Knoxville, Iowa, the son of Ray and Lela (Garretson) Sharp. He attended school in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School in 1949. He was employed by Armour and Company for 34 years, retiring in 1983 in Worthington.
Slim entered the U.S. Army in 1952 at Fort Riley, Kan., before being deployed to Germany during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
Slim married Joy D. Powell on April 10, 1952, in Sioux City. The couple moved to St. Paul, Minn., for a short time in 1963 before making their home in Worthington in 1964. They returned to Sioux City in 2009 to be close to their three children.
Slim grew up in the South Bottoms area of Sioux City and was a member of the Wall Street Mission and Church of All Nations. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Worthington for 45 years, where he sang in the choir for many years. Upon returning to Sioux City, he joined Grace United Methodist Church in 2010. Upon Slim's retirement in 1983, he worked part time at the Atrium Retirement Home and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church along with his wife, Joy.
Slim enjoyed camping, fishing, singing in the Nobles County Barbershop Chorus for 20 years, playing cards, needlework, bowling and baking his world famous cookies. Most of all, he enjoyed watching ... any kind of sports, but especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joy; his two sons, Dennis and his special friend, Lucy Borchgrevink, and Steven, all of Sioux City; his daughter, Louanne (Doc) Zortman of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Kurt (Karen) of Shakopee, Minn., Melisa of Omaha, Daniel of Anderson, Mo., Jessica of Fairfield, Iowa, Austin Ray of Ames, Iowa, and Alicia Ray of Sioux City; three stepgrandchildren, Rik (Lindsay) of Avoka, Iowa, Becky of Sioux City and Russ (Jessica) of Omaha; 10 great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kaitlyn, Lillian, Sibella, Robert, Austin, Montgomery, Madison, Isabella and Jackson; three brothers, Richard of Coon Rapids, Minn., David of Sioux City and Larry of Owosso, Mich.; and a sister, Virginia of Santee, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lesley; and a great-grandchild, Armstrong Zortman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be designated to either Grace United Methodist Church or First United Methodist Church in Worthington.
