SIOUX CITY—Norman W. “Whitey” Johnson, 89, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Merrill Muller of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Whitey was born March 20, 1920, in Wakonda, S.D., to Julius and Hazel (Hansen) Johnson. He moved to Sioux City as a little child with his family and attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. infantry during World War II.
He married Maxine Johns on June 10, 1945, in South Sioux City. She passed away May 11, 1985. Whitey was employed with Armour Packing Plant in Sioux City and the Sioux City Community School District during his working career.
He enjoyed fishing, dancing, hunting and gather with family and friends at all kinds of social events, gardening, feeding the squirrels and taking dare of the appearance of his hard and his house.
Survivors include a special friend of 24 years, Florence Petersen of Sioux City; a sister, June Jensen of Sioux City; nieces and nephews; and other grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Jolene Rose; and a brother, Chuck Irwin.
