SIOUX CITY -- Orval A. Sherrill, 84, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Dan Doran officiating. The Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Orval was born in Brandt, S.D., on Sept. 1, 1925. He moved to the Leeds area of Sioux City as a child and attended school in Leeds. He worked for Chicago Northwestern/Milwaukee Railroad as a switchman for 13 years. He then worked for the Johnson Biscuit Company and later became a boiler operator for the Farmland Co-op, which later became A.G.P.
He married Dolly Coyle in 1977 in Elk Point, SD. He served as a captain on the Woodbury County Sheriff's Reserve for many years and was a first responder for the Flight 232 crash. He received two awards from the Governor of Iowa for his many hours of volunteering. He was an expert marksman and taught gun safety lessons. He loved hunting, fishing and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Dolly; two daughters, Virginia and her husband Floyd Carey of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Cynthia Burwitz of Sioux City; a son, Dave and his wife Diane of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Laura, Debbie, Jessica, Tess, Angela and Todd; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Meghan and Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers; and a sister.
