Patricia A Hammerstrom

Patricia “Pat” Hammerstrom, age 87, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, August 25, 2022, at a local hospital.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2022, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Mater Dei Parish-Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Patricia Anne Sroufe, the daughter of Darrell and Jessie (Blend) Sroufe was born April 2, 1935, in Worthington, MN. She grew up and attended school in Harris, IA. She moved to Sioux City to attend nursing school, graduating in 1956.
On May 2, 1959, Pat was united in marriage to John Hammerstrom in Sibley, IA. The couple made their home in Sioux City.

Pat truly enjoyed her career in nursing. She started working as a nurse’s aide at the hospital in Sibley while still in high school. She moved to Sioux City to attend St. Joseph School of nursing – graduating in 1956. She spent most of her career as a nursing instructor. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital/ Marian Health Center. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Briar Cliff College in 1978. After retirement Pat volunteered as a grief consular with Hospice Grief and Growth Support group. She was also active with the Woodbury County Democratic Party, League of Women voters, and a bible study group at her church.

Pat enjoyed genealogy, reading, puzzles, board and card games, the Sioux City Symphony, opera, organizing holiday celebrations for her family, and crafting with her grandchildren. Her favorite gifts to give to her grandchildren was books.

She is survived by her husband, John Hammerstrom; children, Michael (Rose) Hammerstrom, Thomas (Paula Mae) Hammerstrom, Karen Lesline, Paul Hammerstrom; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Mary Nelson, Blenda Sroufe, Colette (Dave) VonHoldt, Warren (Sueann) Sroufe; sisters-in-law, Frankie Sroufe and Peggy Lee and many nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; son, James Hammerstrom; brothers, Gary Sroufe, Raymond Sroufe, Michael Sroufe; sisters in law Dorothy Dunlap, Elaine Danner, JoAnn Purdy; Brother-in-law Dave Nelson, son-in-law, John Lesline.
