SIOUX CITY -- Patricia C. "Pat" McGarry, 86, of Sioux City died Monday, June 14, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad officiating. An honor guard will be provided by the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing Alumni Association. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to christysmith.com.
Pat was born March 17, 1924, in Beresford, S.D., the daughter of Jerry and Ellen (Kribell) Manning. She was raised in the Beresford area. She graduated from Humbolt (S.D.) High School. She moved to Sioux City around 1944 to attend nursing school and had lived here the rest of her life. In August 1947, she graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing. In 1959, she graduated from Briar Cliff College with her bachelor of science degree in nursing.
She was married to Bernard P. McGarry on Aug. 18, 1962, in Emmett, S.D., by Bishop Joseph Mueller, Bishop of Sioux City. Bernard died Sept. 8, 2005, in Sioux City.
She was employed at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in the emergency/outpatient department from 1947. She retired from Mercy Medical Center in 1997. During her 55-year nursing career, she never missed a day of work. During her career, she was called upon during the Swift explosion in 1947, the polio out break in the Siouxland area in the 1950s and the Flight 232 crash in 1989.
She belonged to the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing Alumni Association and a number of other nursing associations. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was very involved in the Siouxland community through her church, her nursing and her husband and children.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel McGarry and his wife, Georgette of Sioux City, Joseph McGarry of Winona, Minn., and Kevin McGarry and his wife, Fran of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Dennis Boyle of Palo Cedro, Calif., Shannon and Bill Carey of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Colleen and Jake Kemps of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Bryan and Jayme Boyle, Erin Wiswel, Brenna, Patrick and Kieran Carey, Angie Davis, Ryan, Meghan, Tim and Tara McGarry, Heidi and Bridget Kemps and Sean McGarry; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon and Shawn Davis, Danny, Fiona, Aiden, Colin, Connor and Ashlyn McGarry; a brother, Joe Manning of Beresford, S.D.; two sisters, Colette Sweeney and Mary Steen, both of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Donna Manning of Beresford.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Mike Manning.
Pallbearers will be Mike Sweeney, Tom Sweeney, Tim McGarry, Ryan McGarry, Jerry Steen and Rogers Pitts.
Memorials in her name may be directed to Queen of Peace and Hospice of Siouxland.
