Patrick Timothy Garoutte, 63, of Sioux City died at his home Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, from an untimely accident.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Bible Church, 6100 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Terry Embke officiating. Private graveside services will be at a later date in Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Patrick was born on May 25, 1951, in Sioux City, to Margaret (Boyer) and Thomas Garoutte. He graduated from East High School in 1969. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was later assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps in the Dental Corps, during the Vietnam War. He later attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree.
On Aug. 2, 1997, he was united in marriage at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City to the love of his life, Julie Jo Summers. Patrick worked at Siouxland Hematology-Oncology for many years as director of clinical research. He later was the administrative director of Clinical Research at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he worked in research for several diseases. Patrick went on sabbatical four years ago to write a novel, which he finished. He recently went to work for Securitas, and continued to write a second novel.
Patrick was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was currently very active and faithful as a member of Morningside Bible Church and was the leader for Young Adults for Christ. His passion was for teens and he was a council member for Teens Encounter Christ and worked as a leader on the weekend retreats. He was also active in Prison Ministry.
Patrick will be remembered as a man who declared Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a friend to many, helping each person, friend or family, with many tasks, large or small with that huge smile, great sense of humor and the stories he told. He had a special friend, Simon Peter, the cat. He and Julie loved traveling and visiting life-long friends, especially the 4x50, and enjoyed going on cruises with the Gaither Homecoming Family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Julie; two sons, Aaron (Julene) Garoutte of Sheridan, Wyo., and Ryan (Amanda) Summers of Lorimor, Iowa; two grandsons, Aaron "AJ" Garoutte Jr. and Landon Caleb Summers; one great-grandson; one brother, Daniel (Nancy) Garoutte of Shellsburg, Iowa; mother-in-law, Patricia Lingren-Conard of Ida Grove, Iowa; brothers-in-law, James (Jan) Summers of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Steve (Kathy) Lingren of Schleswig, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Lt. Gen. Susan Lawrence, retired, of Alexandria, Va., and Kelli Whiteing of Okoboji, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
